European AD Task Force Affirms Common Interventions

When the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (ETFAD) and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology released its position paper on the management of atopic dermatitis in March, there was little variation from current recommendations in the US (Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology; 24(3): 317-328). The basis of therapy remains moisturization and avoidance of specific and non-specific triggers, the authors say. The panel affirmed the role of topical corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors in management and indicated that oral antihistamines are appropriate only for the management of pruritus.

The panel recommends psychosomatic counseling for stress-induced exacerbations and notes the success of the “eczema school” model of educational programs in Europe. Programs, which vary in their specific design and components, typically include intensive education on disease pathogenesis and management options along with behavior therapy in efforts to optimize treatment results while minimizing the detrimental effects of scratching, contact with triggers, and use of improper skin care.
